Liz Carmack is a writer, editor, researcher, and author.
She founded Liz Carmack Communications in 2006 after more than 20 years of working in the field, first as a newspaper journalist, then as a professional communicator for organizations including the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, KLRU-TV (Austin’s Public Broadcasting Service station), and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
While she is a versatile communicator with broad experience, she specializes in two areas.
Nonfiction books: Liz conducts historical research and writes nonfiction books for clients, including histories of organizations and businesses. She also researches and writes narratives about historic properties, and produces applications for Registered Texas Historic Landmark designations.
Her latest book – Rodeo Austin: Blue Ribbons, Buckin' Broncs, and Big Dreams – was commissioned by The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, one of Texas’ largest charities. Liz spent more than a year researching and writing this 75-year history, which includes more than 100 photographs. Texas A&M University Press will release the book in March 2012.
Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler's Guide (Texas A&M University Press, 2007), also by Liz, is the only guide of its kind on the shelves, and is in its second printing.
Business writing: Liz also helps businesses, associations, and government agencies better communicate with target audiences through her writing and editing – whether it’s business-to-business marketing copy, website content, or advertorials. She is a skilled interviewer with particular experience researching and writing about scientific, environmental, and industrial topics.
An Oklahoma native, Liz has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in mass communication from the University of Leicester in Leicester, England, where she attended on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. She and her husband happily settled in Austin in 1988, shortly after their wedding day.
She is a member of the Association for Women in Communications – Austin Chapter, and Freelance Austin.
